about

The great jazz sax player Sonny Rollins wrote "St Thomas" in a calypso style based on the melody of the old english tune Lincolnshire Poacher
"When I was bound apprentice in famous Lincolnshire
Full well I served my master for nigh on seven years
Till I took up to poaching as you shall quickly hear..."

For this project celebrating Haiti I reset the story in broken French, reflecting the history of this very rowdy northern port. "Sugar and blood in the bay! Good God, please excuse my better angel".

lyrics

J'ai ete un apprentis des pirates Francais.
Nous avons prit tout les tresors du Port de Paix.
Sucre et sang dans l'etang!
Bondye excusez mon gros bon ange!

And the beat goes on...
